Answer engine optimization, defined
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your business named and cited in the direct answers AI engines and answer boxes give, rather than only ranking as a blue link. The answer engines are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, and voice assistants. When someone asks one of them a question in your field, AEO is the work that makes it quote you as a source.
Classic SEO earns a position in a list of ten links and waits for the click. AEO earns a mention inside the answer itself, where there may be no list and no click at all. As more searches end in an answer instead of a page of links, being the cited source is the new front page.
AEO vs SEO: what actually changes
AEO does not replace SEO; it sits on top of it. An engine can only cite a page it can crawl, read, and trust, so the technical and authority fundamentals of SEO still matter. What changes is the goal and the unit of success.
- The unit of success. SEO optimizes for a ranking position; AEO optimizes for a citation inside an answer. You can rank page one and still never be named in the AI answer above it.
- The content shape. SEO rewards comprehensive pages; AEO rewards pages that answer a specific question cleanly in the first few sentences, so a model can lift a self-contained, accurate passage.
- The measurement. SEO watches positions and clicks; AEO watches whether engines name you, how they describe you, and who they name instead. We covered that measurement gap in how AI search changes marketing attribution.
AEO vs GEO: are they the same thing?
Nearly, and the industry uses both terms. The useful distinction: answer engine optimization (AEO) is the umbrella — being the cited answer across every answer surface, from Google’s AI Overviews to voice. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the slice aimed specifically at generative models like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. In practice the work overlaps almost entirely, so you do not need to pick a camp. For the generative-engine specifics, see our guide to generative engine optimization and our AI Search Visibility (GEO) practice.
How answer engines choose what to cite
An answer engine assembles a reply from sources it can reach and trust, then names one to three of them. From our research into how AI engines select sources, the signals that decide who gets cited are consistent:
- Machine-readability. If your key facts only appear after JavaScript runs, many engines never see them. The HTML your server sends is what they read first.
- A clear, consistent entity. The engine has to know who you are — the same name, category, and description across your site, your schema, and the places that describe you.
- Answer-first content. A page that states the answer plainly and early gives the model a clean passage to quote. A page that buries it does not.
- Third-party corroboration. Reviews, directories, and mentions the engine already trusts. In our citation study, brand-owned pages earned only about five percent of citations; the rest came from sources you do not own.
- Structured data and llms.txt. Schema and a clean llms.txt help an engine parse what you do and which pages matter.
How to do answer engine optimization
AEO is a sequence, not a trick. In order of leverage:
1. Make the site machine-readable. Serve your content and key facts in the HTML, not only after JavaScript. Check it with our free AI Readiness Score or a full SEO report.
2. Fix your entity. Make your name, category, and one-line description identical across your site, your Organization schema, and your profiles. Inconsistency is the most common reason an engine does not know a real business.
3. Write answer-first. For each question your customers ask, publish a page that answers it in the first two sentences, then supports it. That self-contained passage is what gets quoted.
4. Earn third-party trust. Reviews, accurate directory listings, and mentions on sources the engines already read. You cannot cite yourself into an answer.
5. Add the machine layer. Organization, Product, FAQ, and Review schema where they apply, plus an llms.txt. These do not force a citation, but they remove the reasons an engine skips you.
How to measure AEO
You cannot manage what you do not watch, and answer citations do not show up as clicks. Track three things on a schedule: whether the engines name you for your key questions, how they describe you when they do, and who they name instead. Our free AI Citation Checker runs those checks live, and our AI Visibility Monitoring practice tracks the trend month over month. Watch whether branded search rises after the engines start naming you — that lag is the clearest sign AEO is working.
Who needs answer engine optimization
Any business whose customers ask questions an AI can answer, which is almost all of them. If people research your category before they buy, the engines are already answering those questions, with or without you in the reply. AEO decides whether you are the business they name. The cheapest place to start is finding out where you stand.

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of getting your business named and cited in the direct answers AI engines give, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and voice assistants, rather than only ranking as a link. When someone asks a question in your field, AEO is the work that makes the engine quote you as a source.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO optimizes for a ranking position in a list of links and waits for the click. AEO optimizes for a citation inside the answer itself, where there may be no list and no click. AEO builds on SEO, because an engine can only cite a page it can crawl, read, and trust, but the goal is the mention, not the position.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Nearly. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the umbrella term for being the cited answer across every answer surface; generative engine optimization (GEO) is the slice aimed specifically at generative models like ChatGPT and Perplexity. The work overlaps almost entirely, so you do not need to choose between them.
How do you optimize for answer engines?
Make the site machine-readable with facts in the HTML rather than only after JavaScript, fix your entity so your name and description are consistent everywhere, write answer-first content that states the answer early, earn third-party reviews and mentions, and add structured data plus an llms.txt. Then track whether the engines name you.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO sits on top of SEO. Engines can only cite pages they can crawl, read, and trust, so SEO fundamentals still matter. AEO adds a goal SEO never had: being named inside the answer, not just ranking near it.
How do you measure answer engine optimization?
Track three things on a schedule: whether AI engines name you for your key questions, how they describe you, and who they name instead. Citations do not appear as clicks, so watch mentions and branded-search lift rather than rankings alone.
