How the AI search ROI calculator works

The model is deliberately simple, because the honest answer is that nobody has a precise number for how many buying decisions now start in an AI assistant — only that the share is growing. So the calculator does four steps of arithmetic you can check by hand:

The visibility score is the same 0–100 measure SEMPITE’s free check and API return: how often the engines mention your brand when asked, weighted by whether they cite your website. Treating it as a share of the exposed revenue is a simplification — being named in an answer is not the same as winning the customer — but it is the right order of magnitude for deciding whether the channel deserves attention.

Why current visibility usually starts near zero

Most businesses that run the free check for the first time score under 20. That isn’t a reflection of quality — it’s that AI engines build their answers from a narrow set of sources, and most small-business websites aren’t among them. Our own research found that ChatGPT never mentions 43% of businesses ranking in Google’s top three for their own category, and that only 5.1% of AI citations go to brand-owned sites. Good Google rankings do not carry over automatically. That gap is what the upside number is measuring.

The research behind the defaults

SEMPITE measures how AI engines actually answer, industry by industry, and publishes the results. These are the numbers the calculator’s framing rests on.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI search ROI calculator?

A calculator that estimates how much of your revenue now runs through AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude — and what it is worth to be recommended in their answers more often. You enter customer volume, customer value, and current AI visibility; it returns the revenue exposed to AI search and the annual upside of a higher score.

Where do the default assumptions come from?

The defaults are deliberately conservative placeholders and every one is editable. The share of research starting in AI assistants varies widely by industry, so set it to what you believe about your own buyers. SEMPITE's research found ChatGPT never mentions 43% of businesses ranking in Google's top three, and only 5.1% of AI citations go to brand-owned sites — which is why current visibility often starts near zero.

How do I find my current AI visibility score?

Run the free visibility check — it asks ChatGPT and Google's AI about your brand live and returns a 0–100 score in about a minute. Enter that number in the current-visibility field.

Is this a forecast?

No. It is arithmetic on your own assumptions, meant to size the opportunity, not promise a result. Real outcomes depend on your market, your competition, and the work done. Use it to decide whether AI visibility is worth investigating, then measure the real number with the free check.
