What Google AI Mode actually does for local queries
AI Mode is Google’s full conversational search. Ask it for an HVAC contractor near you and it writes a short answer that names businesses, gives a reason for each, and pulls in hours, ratings, and a phone number. Under the hood, for local questions, it leans heavily on the same signals that build the map pack: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your category, and your proximity to the searcher. That is why our index found it restating the map pack so often. When AI Mode names three plumbers, they are usually the three you would have seen on the map anyway.
This matters because it means the local SEO you have already done is not wasted. It also means the ceiling is the same. If you are not in the map pack for a query, AI Mode is unlikely to invent a reason to name you. The work is the profile, and the profile has to be better than the three businesses currently above you.
AI Overviews vs AI Mode for a local business
AI Overviews are the summary box at the top of a normal results page. AI Mode is a separate tab where the whole page is the answer and the conversation continues. For local queries the difference is mostly how much room the engine has. An Overview might name one or two businesses or none, and often just explains what to look for. AI Mode almost always names specific businesses, which is why our index measures it. Optimize for AI Mode and the Overview tends to follow, because both are reading the same profile and the same reviews.
The Google Business Profile work that AI Mode rewards
The engine needs to be able to say why it picked you. Everything below gives it a sentence to use.
Primary category, chosen precisely. “Emergency plumber” and “plumber” produce different answers. Pick the one that matches the question customers ask, then add the secondary categories that are true.
Services listed one by one. AI Mode matches the specific service in the question to the specific service on your profile. A profile that says “full-service dental” loses to one that lists “same-day crowns” when someone asks for same-day crowns.
Reviews with specifics. The engine quotes reviews. “Great service” gives it nothing. “Fixed our furnace on a Sunday for the price they quoted” gives it a reason. Ask customers to mention what you did, and reply to reviews with the service named.
Photos of the work, not the logo. Recent photos of jobs, the storefront, and the team. AI Mode reads image context, and profiles with fresh photos get described more confidently.
Questions and answers filled in. The Q&A section is a direct feed of question-shaped text. Seed it with the eight questions you get on the phone and answer each in two sentences.
Hours that are actually right. Wrong hours are the fastest way to get dropped from an answer for a “open now” question. Update holidays a week ahead.
Name, address, and phone identical everywhere. Your profile, your website, and the top directories in your category should agree to the character. Mismatches read as two different businesses. The full profile walkthrough is in our Google Business Profile optimization guide.
Why ranking on Google does not mean ChatGPT knows you
This is the part of the index that surprises people. ChatGPT and Perplexity do not read your Google Business Profile. They build an answer from the open web: your site, directories, review platforms, news, and forums. If your identity there is thin or inconsistent, the map pack cannot save you. In our August run, plumbers were the worst case, with ChatGPT naming only a third of Google’s top-three businesses. Real estate agents fared best at just over three quarters, and they are the category with the most third-party profiles per person. That is not a coincidence.
The fix is boring and it works: the same name, category, and one-paragraph description on your site, your profile, Yelp, the industry directories, and any local press, plus a real About page that says who you are and where you work. We cover the ChatGPT side in depth in ChatGPT visibility for local businesses.
A local AI-visibility checklist you can finish in an afternoon
- Search your top five customer questions in Google AI Mode and write down who it names and why. That is your competition and its reasons.
- Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the same five questions. Note where you disappear. That gap is your identity problem, not your ranking problem.
- Fix your primary category and list every service you actually offer as its own line.
- Reply to your last ten reviews naming the service. Ask your next five customers to mention the specific job.
- Upload six recent photos of real work. Delete anything older than two years that no longer looks like you.
- Copy your name, address, phone, and one-paragraph description from your profile onto your site’s contact and About pages, then check the top three directories for your category and make them match.
- Seed the Q&A section with eight real questions and short answers.
- Check robots.txt for accidental blocks on GPTBot and PerplexityBot. It happens more than you would think.

Get in TouchFrequently Asked Questions
How do I optimize my local business for Google AI Mode?
Treat it like the map pack with a voice. Choose a precise primary category, list each service separately, collect reviews that name the specific job, keep photos and hours current, fill in the Q&A section, and make your name, address, and phone identical across your site and directories. AI Mode names the top map-pack business about 90 percent of the time, so profile strength carries over.
Is Google AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
No. AI Overviews are the summary box on a standard results page and often name no business at all. AI Mode is a separate conversational search that almost always names specific businesses with reasons. Both read the same profile and reviews, so optimizing for AI Mode generally improves Overview presence too.
Why does ChatGPT not mention my business when I rank on Google?
ChatGPT does not read your Google Business Profile. It builds answers from the open web: your site, directories, reviews, news, and forums. In our August index it skipped 43 percent of Google's top-three local businesses. A consistent name, category, and description across those sources is the fix.
Do reviews affect AI Mode results?
Yes, and specific reviews matter more than star counts alone. AI Mode quotes review language as the reason it recommends a business, so reviews that name the service and the outcome give the engine something to say about you.
How can I check whether AI engines mention my business?
Ask them directly and on a schedule. Search your main customer questions in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity once a month and record who is named. A free visibility check automates the first pass, and a rank checker confirms the Google side.
