One Search Term Outweighs Every Mechanical Car Repair in America, Twice Over
We mapped 22.1 million monthly US searches across the twenty kinds of shop a driver might actually need. The demand is not distributed the way the industry talks about itself — and the money is not where the searches are.
The demand map
Monthly US search volume by category, each built from a basket of real query variants rather than a single head term:
Four categories — car wash, tires, general mechanic, oil change — account for 73.6% of everything measured. The nine mechanical-repair categories together total 2,405,600 searches a month, which is less than half of what the single query “car wash near me” (5,000,000) does on its own.
Volume and value point in opposite directions
If search volume told you where the money was, tires and car washes would be the most valuable work in the industry. Advertisers disagree, and they are betting their own budgets:

The two biggest categories by volume are the two cheapest clicks in the study. A towing click costs three times a car-wash click; a transmission click more than double. Advertisers pay for the job with the invoice attached, not the one with the audience.
Nobody searches for the repair. They search for the symptom.
The strangest numbers in the set are at the bottom. “Engine” as a category draws 26,200 searches a month nationally. “Diagnostics” draws 24,900. Those are rounding errors against 823,000 monthly searches for mechanic near me.
Engine work is among the highest-ticket jobs a shop can book. It is essentially unsearched as a service. What people search instead is the thing they can observe from the driver’s seat — a warning light, a noise, a smell — or they skip straight past the diagnosis to the generic query and let a shop work it out.
The practical consequence: a shop that builds its website around the services it performs is building for demand that does not exist in that vocabulary. The searches are symptom-shaped and generic-shaped. Very little of this traffic arrives asking for the repair by name.
Where the AI answer layer fits
83.1% of all measured demand carries “near me.” That is the single most important number here, and it connects directly to our companion study published this week.
When we ran 72 local automotive service searches through Google’s AI Overview, an AI answer appeared just 6.9% of the time. Nine of twelve metros returned none at all. So the overwhelming majority of this category’s search demand sits precisely where Google’s AI Overview currently is not operating.
Read together, the two studies say something fairly specific, and it is worth being precise about how far it goes. On Google’s AI Overview, local repair intent still resolves to a map pack rather than a written answer. What that surface does own is the advice layer above it, which fires on 90% of the questions a driver asks before they ever type “near me.” The demand is local; that surface’s influence is national.
What this does not settle. Neither study tested ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini. That matters, because the statistic most often quoted to repair shops — that AI recommends barely 1% of local businesses — comes from research into ChatGPT, a different surface with different sourcing. Our finding and that one are not in conflict; they measure different things. Anyone reading this as “AI is not a threat to local shops” is reading further than the data goes, and we would rather say so than let the headline do work the evidence cannot.
Methodology
Data collected 6 August 2026. 131 keywords, grouped by hand into 20 service categories, measured for United States monthly search volume and cost per click through Google Ads data via DataForSEO. Every keyword returned both volume and CPC — there are no gaps in the figures reported here. Category totals sum the volumes of every keyword in that category’s basket; “near me” totals sum only the variants containing that phrase.
What we excluded and why. We also pulled keyword difficulty, and we are not reporting it: 40 of the 131 keywords returned a difficulty of exactly zero, including “transmission shop near me” at 201,000 monthly searches. That is a missing value being rendered as a zero rather than a real measurement, and averaging it would have produced a confidently wrong claim about which categories are easy to rank for.
Limits. Google Ads volumes are bucketed rather than exact, so category totals indicate relative scale, not a precise market size. The keyword baskets are hand-built and deliberately representative rather than exhaustive — a longer tail exists beneath every category and would raise all totals without much changing their order. Some queries could reasonably sit in two categories; each is counted once, in the closest fit. And “car wash near me,” the largest single term in the study, is substantially navigational — people locating any nearby car wash — which is why we also report a repair-only view: excluding detailing, towing and inspection leaves 14,692,210 monthly searches, of which tires are 33.9%, general mechanic 23.9% and oil change 15.6%.
