The fastest way: a free Google rank checker
If you want one number in under a minute, use a rank checker. Enter your domain and the keyword, pick the country, and the tool pulls a live Google results page and tells you the position your site holds and which page of Google that lands on. We built a free one at sempite.com/tools/google-rank-checker for exactly this. It reads the same results a searcher in the United States would see, without your personal history tilting the answer.
A rank checker is the right tool when you already know the keyword and want to confirm the position today. It is the wrong tool for discovering which keywords you rank for in the first place. That job belongs to Search Console, covered next.
Where does my website rank for keywords? Use Search Console
Google Search Console is free, it comes from Google itself, and it shows every query that produced an impression for your site over the last sixteen months. Here is the routine.
- Sign in at search.google.com/search-console and pick your property. If your site is not verified yet, DNS verification takes about ten minutes.
- Open the Performance report in the left menu and choose Search results.
- Turn on the Average position toggle above the chart. It is off by default, which is why most people never see it.
- Set the date range to the last 28 days. Shorter windows are noisy, longer windows hide recent movement.
- In the table below the chart, sort by impressions. The queries near the top with positions between 8 and 20 are the ones you can move fastest.
- Click any query, then switch the table to Pages. That tells you which page of your site Google is showing for that keyword. If it is the wrong page, you have a cannibalization problem to fix before anything else.
Search Console answers the broad question, which keywords does my site rank for, and a rank checker answers the narrow one, where do I sit for this keyword right now. Use both.
What page of Google am I on?
Google shows ten organic results per page for most queries, so the math is simple. Divide the position by ten and round up. Position 3 is page one. Position 11 is page two. Position 27 is page three. Anything past position 30 is, for practical purposes, invisible, since fewer than one percent of searchers go that deep.
The wrinkle is the word average. Search Console reports Average position, which is the mean of every position your page held across every impression in the date range. A page that showed at position 4 for half the searches and position 16 for the other half reports as position 10. That is why a rank checker and Search Console can disagree by several places and both be right. The checker shows a single snapshot, Search Console shows the blend.
Also count what sits above the organic results. Ads, a map pack, a People Also Ask box, and an AI Overview can push position 1 halfway down the screen. Position 1 on a query with an AI Overview gets far fewer clicks than position 1 on a plain results page.
Why your rank differs from what a friend sees
Almost every week someone tells me they rank number one and their friend cannot find them. Four things cause it.
- Location. Google localizes results down to the city, and for service businesses down to the neighborhood. A plumber ranks on page one in the town they serve and nowhere in the next county.
- Personalization. If you have visited your own site a hundred times, Google may nudge it up for you. Your friend gets the neutral version. Incognito helps but does not fully remove location.
- Device. Mobile and desktop results differ, and most local searches happen on phones. Check both.
- AI Overviews. When Google answers the query itself at the top of the page, the organic list starts lower and the AI answer may cite different sites than the ones that rank. You can rank first and still not be the site the AI answer names.
Rank checkers fix the first two by querying from a neutral, chosen location. If you want to see the personalized reality, ask a customer in your service area to search and send you a screenshot.
Check my website rank for keywords: a 5-minute routine
Do this once a month and you will know more about your visibility than most agencies tell their clients.
- List your ten money keywords, the ones a paying customer would actually type. Not “seo”, but “seo consultant brooklyn”.
- Run each one through the rank checker for your main service area and write down position and page.
- Open Search Console, filter the Performance report to the last 28 days, and note Average position and clicks for the same ten queries.
- Flag anything between position 8 and 20. Those are one content update away from page one. Our post on how to improve your Google ranking walks through what that update looks like.
- Keep the numbers in a single sheet with one column per month. Movement over three months tells you far more than any single reading. If a new page is not showing at all, read how long it takes to show up on Google before you panic.
Ranking on Google is only half of visibility in 2026
A growing share of your customers never see a results page. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Mode and get a paragraph with two or three businesses named in it. Your Google position does not guarantee a spot in that paragraph. In our own tracking, a business ranking in Google’s top three is left out of the ChatGPT answer for the same query almost half the time.
So after you check your rank, run the second check. The AI Citation Checker shows whether Google AI and ChatGPT mention your brand for a query, and the free visibility check scores your whole footprint across search, maps, and AI answers. If both checks come back weak and you want the fix list rather than the diagnosis, that is what our SEO audit service is for.

Get in TouchFrequently Asked Questions
How do I check page rank for keywords in Google?
Use a rank checker for a single keyword: enter your domain, the keyword, and the country, and read the position it returns. For every keyword your site already ranks for, open Google Search Console, go to Performance, turn on Average position, and sort the query table by impressions. Divide any position by ten and round up to get the page number.
What page of Google am I on?
Divide your position by ten and round up. Position 7 is page one, position 12 is page two, position 25 is page three. Search Console reports an average across all impressions, so a page that swings between positions 4 and 16 shows as position 10 even though it is sometimes on page one.
Where does my website rank for keywords for free?
Google Search Console is free and shows every query your site appears for, with average position, impressions, and clicks. For a live single-keyword check, use a free rank checker such as the one at sempite.com/tools/google-rank-checker. Neither costs anything.
Why does my rank look different on my phone than on my laptop?
Google serves different results for mobile and desktop, and it localizes by your current location. Your phone reports a more precise location than a desktop on office wifi, so local businesses shift more between the two. Check the device your customers actually use, which for local services is usually mobile.
Does ranking first on Google mean ChatGPT will recommend me?
No. AI answers draw on a wider set of sources than the ten blue links, and a site can rank first on Google while being absent from the ChatGPT answer for the same question. Check both with a rank checker and an AI citation checker, and treat them as two separate scores.
